admin.winproxy page

When you type admin.winproxy into your browser, you will see the WinProxy HTML administrator interface displayed. In the center of the page there are two types of statistics displayed- Antivirus Statistics and Connection Statistics. These statistics will let you know how much traffic has traveled in and out of your network while also letting you know if any viruses have been detected and if so, on which data protocol (i.e. HTTP or FTP).

Antivirus Statistics

Antivirus statistics are divided into three categories: Protocol, Files scanned, and Viruses detected. Protocol refers to the type of data traffic, i.e. HTTP- which is web traffic and some downloads, FTP which is file transfers, POP3 for getting your email, and SMTP for mail transport. For most users on home networks, POP3 is your incoming mail and SMTP is used for your outgoing mail. Files scanned tells you how many files have been scanned for viruses. Viruses detected tells you how many viruses have been caught by WinProxy. You can use this information to identify potential virus problems and to let you know which protocols are catching viruses. Most users will find the bulk of the viruses are on the mail protocol.

WinProxy can also stop viruses that you would send inadvertently to your friends or other internet users. If you are using SMTP only to send mail, and you see SMTP virus count going up faster than the others, look for a virus that is already resident on one of your machines. It may have been there for a while or it may have come in on a floppy or CDROM instead of over the network.

Connection Statistics

Connection statistics give you an overview of the tcp sessions that WinProxy has handled. You may notice that 'Requests' ticks up steadily even when you have little other traffic. Among the connections counted in this category are the requests from your browser while you are connected to the WinProxy HTML interface. Many of the pages - such as the Stats page - have fairly short refresh rates and you'll see 'Requests' tick up every ten or fifteen seconds as long as you have this interface connected.

MAC Addresses

On an ethernet network, every network adapter (also known as a node) has a unique ethernet address. These addresses, known as MAC (Media Access Control) addresses, are used in ethernet routing on your local network. Ethernet-based networks are ubiquitious these days. If you don't know what kind of network you have, then you have an ethernet network. That's all you can buy at consumer computer stores.

The MAC addresses on your WinProxy computer are shown in the lower right, along with the traffic on each broken down into incoming and outgoing data. Broadly speaking, the traffic through each network adapter will be in the same ballpark, but you are unlikely to see them with nearly equal traffic. There is a lot of traffic - including the traffic generated by the HTML interface itself - that terminates at the WinProxy computer without going out the other side.

Current Downloads

"Current Downloads" is used to inform you of the progress of any downloads that are for WinProxy itself, including antivrus updates, antivirus engine updates, or site filtering updates. This does not monitor the downloads that you have requested with other applications like browsers.
