Email - Receiving
Use this tab to configure options for receiving mail.
- Receive mail while ? MB free on partition
- You must have this checked in order to receive mail through WinGate. The number you enter here is the ‘low watermark’ for the mail server i.e. when this figure is reached, WinGate will stop receiving mail, and only deliver.
- Allow relay
- Select this if you wish the Wingate mail server to accept and send email for domains that are not local. Note: This option is a potential security risk and is not recommended.
- Max Message Size
- Check this box and fill in the field to set size limits on all incoming mail.
- Max number of recipients
- Check this box and fill in the field to set limits on how many mail recipients can be delivered to at any one time.
- Disconnect if sender sends ? disallowed commands
- This limits the number of commands the server will tolerate before the connection will be terminated. Lower this limit if you have a slower Internet connection.
- Block Invalid Sender Domain
- Check this box to examine the validity of mail from incoming IP addresses. When turned on, this option ensures that the domain is valid against DNS records and/or a mail exchange (MX) record. It also checks that the IP addresses and server names are not obviously bogus (e.g. 127.0.0.1 – or any other loopback addresses – are invalid).
- Block Blank Return Path
- Check this box if you don’t want to receive emails that don’t have a valid return path i.e. checking this is a good way of reducing spam.
- Block Numeric Sender Domains
- Check this box if you don’t want to receive emails that contain IPs in the address field. This is a common spamming technique.
- Use Open Relay Detection
- Check this box to enter the domain name or IP of a server if you want this server to check the sender’s IP against known open relay server lists. You do this in the subsequent Open Relay Database Settings dialog.
- Block Spoofed Sender Address
- Check this box and use the subsequent Sender Address Validation Settings window to check whether the IP address of the sender is using the same service provider as the server responsible for receiving mail for that domain.
- Block Attachment File Types
- You may wish to ban attachment file types that are a potential virus risk to your network e.g. .exe, .vbs, .pif, .com, .scr. Enter these attachment types into the subsequent Banned Attachments screen.
- Allow Relay
- Select this if you want the WinGate mail server to accept and send email for domains that are not local. Checking this box in the Trusted Senders section is not the security risk that checking it in the Untrusted section is because this only pertains to users on your LAN.
