Authenticating users

WinGate authentication is based on either:

  • WinGate passwords(when using WinGate's built in user database).
  • Windows NT / 2000/XP Pro/.Net(2003) passwords (when using the Operating System Database).

Authentication is required by WinGate so that it can determine which user is accessing which services, and apply the policies set by the administrator, appropriately.

You should learn about these approaches before learning how to implement authentication:

There are Four different ways of getting users to authenticate (supply a name and password) for key WinGate Services.

  • Users can authenticate for WRP Service with the WinGate Internet Client login dialog (click here for more)
  • Logging on with a remote GateKeeper (With WinGate Pro and Enterprise) (click here for more)
  • Users can authenticate for WWW Proxy Service with the WinGate Java logon applet (click here for more )
  • Users can authenticate for WWW Proxy Service using NTLM logon applet in Internet Explorer (or NTLM supported browser) (click here for more )

Note:

About Insecure Authentication with Telnet:

In addition to the above, users can make use of insecure authentication in Telnet or SOCKS 5 to achieve an assumed level of authentication.

Note:

Ability to use NTLM authentication in the WWW Proxy is Available only to WinGate 6 Pro and Enterprise
