About the ISA Server console

The Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004 console consists of a window divided into three panes, as illustrated in the graphic.

ISA Server console

The left pane displays the console tree. The console tree shows the nodes that are available in the console. The middle pane contains the details pane. The details pane shows information about, and functions pertaining to, these items. As you click different items in the console tree, the information in the details pane changes. The details pane can display many types of information including Web pages, graphics, charts, tables, and columns.

The right pane contains the Task pane (labeled 3 in the graphic). The task pane can include a Tasks bar and a Help bar. On the Firewall Policy node, the Task pane also includes the Toolbox.

Each console has its own menus and toolbar, separate from those of the main MMC window, that help a user perform tasks.

Task Pane

On the split bar, click the arrow button to close the Task pane (labeled 4 in the graphic). However, some tasks are available only from the Task bar. Furthermore, this Help describes how to perform most tasks using the Task bar links.

Toolbox

The Toolbox pane is available only on the Firewall Policy node. It includes a list of rule elements, which can be used in the firewall policy rules: protocol definitions, users, content types, schedules, and network objects. You can drag and drop items from the Toolbox into rules listed on the Firewall Policy details pane, thereby easily modifying the rule.

Drag and Drop

In the Firewall Policy editor, you can edit rules by opening the property sheets for the specific rule. Alternatively, you can drag applicable rule elements from the Toolbox into the appropriate location in the Firewall Policy editor.
